How many times have you been brimming with enthusiasm to embark on a weight loss program, only to find that a few weeks later you have fallen off the bandwagon. All weight loss success stories have one thing in common – consistency; and this means staying motivated. I know it’s difficult to maintain a high level of motivation to lose weight once the initial novelty has worn off. Here are some of the tricks I use to stay motivated while on a weight loss program.

 

Motivation to lose weight – Trick 1: Visualization

This method involves you visualizing how you would look once you attained your weight loss goal. We all know that it is important to write down your weight loss goal in terms of pounds, inches or % fat to lose. I believe it is equally, if not more important to establish your goal in your mind as well. The unfortunate thing is that most overweight people cannot visualize themselves in the bodies that they so desire. No matter how hard they try externally, there will be no motivation to lose weight when they subconsciously believe that they can’t do it.

So, how does one overcome this? Find pictures of the kind of body you would like to attain. Now, imagine looking at yourself in a full length mirror  and seeing the body in the picture except with your head looking right back at you. Do this once in the morning and night for 5 minutes at a time. The important thing is that while you visualize, you must think that you have already attained this and try to feel that emotion of happiness and joy. Don’t worry about how you will attain your goal. If you keep at it, I assure you will find a way, in fact a way will be shown to you. I know this sounds a bit ‘out there’ but this has been tremendously powerful for me and I wanted to share this with you.

Join a social networking website for weight loss and fitness. Here you will find hundreds if not thousands of similar people. You can share stories and ideas with each other. Also by sharing your weight loss goals with others you will tend to stay more motivated.

Take the support of your family and friends. Make your weight loss goals known to your close friends and family. Make sure they understand how important it is to you. Keep them informed of your progress on a regular basis. Being surrounded by a positive atmosphere will do wonders for your motivation to lose weight.

Motivation to lose weight – Trick 4

Hire a personal trainer. A personal trainer goes a long way in maintaining your motivation to lose weight. If you think otherwise, just think of the latest movie star’s physique makeover. You will find that most of them use personal trainers to help them achieve their results.

Motivation to lose weight – Trick 5

Maintain a journal. While the previous motivation to lose weight tricks consisted of making you accountable to others, this one makes you accountable to yourself. You are less likely to cheat on your diet or slack off on your exercise routine if you have to note it down in your journal. The important thing here is to be honest in your journal. Let’s face it, if you can’t be honest with yourself, who can you be honest with?
